One of the most important decisions to make when you decide to move is where you are going to move to.
If you are like most people, you will pull up a map online and start clicking on the homes for sale in the area that you're interested in. You'll consider the price, the bedroom / bathroom count, and the condition that it's in. When I am searching properties or someone tells me about a home for sale one of the first questions that I think to ask is "Where is it at?"
Here are a few things to consider as you search for your perfect area.
Consider Commute Times
How long will the ride to work be? ... In rush hour.
Around the north suburbs of Illinois a ride to work at peak commuting times can take twice as long as the same trip when there is no traffic. Plan on taking few visits to check out your favorite neighborhoods during rush hour so that you can see just how backed up the traffic can get.
Villages and neighborhoods can have a lot to offer in natural and community planned assets.
If you like hiking and biking you may want to live near one of the great forest preserves that Lake County has to offer. I have a diverse selection of at least 10 forest preserves nearby that offer some of the most beautiful lakes, hills, forests, barns, and equine trails, etc. If you want to relax and unwind while you get fresh air and exercise, visiting these is the perfect way to do it. https://www.lcfpd.org/preserves/
Communities can offer a variety of planned fun activities, recreation centers, pools, libraries, sports complexes, etc. Visit a village hall or research the town that you are looking at online to make sure that it offers the right amount of what is important to you.
Research the school district that you are looking in. Consider the school's ratings and maybe take a visit to see the school itself. Even if you don't have kids, homes in desirable school districts can tend to hold their value steady and will be easier to sell if you ever decide to move again.
Real Estate Taxes
Lets face it, in Lake County real estate taxes can tend to be a bit high. Overall though, we have one of the safest, most well maintained areas with great schools and communities that are growing and focused on improving. The taxes for a new construction home in a populated area are going to be significantly higher then the taxes on an existing home in an unincorporated part of town. When you are choosing your area, take taxes into consideration and compare multiple homes in the various areas to see what would suit you best.
Too Much to Decide?
There is a lot more to consider when planning where you want to move. My best advice to you is to hire a realtor to help! A professional Realtor has access to countless resources that can gather up research to be presented to you for your consideration. The best part is when you are working with an agent to buy a home, it doesn't cost you a thing! Find an agent who is knowledgeable and genuinely interested and helping you out and then you can find your new location with ease and confidence.
